To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list any sites of special scientific interest that have been ploughed up for cereal growing in the last 12 months showing their habitat type; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 25 March 1988]:The NCC's 13th annual report shows that 27 SSSIs notified under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 suffered damage (mainly superficial) from agricultural activities. Another 21 awaiting or proposed for notification suffered similarly. The Nature Conservancy Council is compiling the information requested in respect of cereal growing. I shall write to the hon. Member with the details shortly.
