§ Mr. NewtonTotal expenditure for 1986–87 (the latest year for which figures are available) in health districts and family practitioner committee areas, which cover inner city areas, was as follows:

attributed to particular regions or districts. Total expenditure has been estimated pro-rata to the total population of each region with expenditure assigned to each region geographically (ie from the annual accounts of the family practitioner committees which account for it). This was a total of £5,671 million within a total expenditure of £14,745 million. However, it should be noted that many of these districts and FPCs serve a geographical area considerably wider than the inner city and, in particular, that a number of the inner city districts contain teaching hospitals and provide regional specialty services, in addition to their local services. It is not possible to disaggregate those elements of expenditure which relate directly to the inner city areas.
