HC Deb 29 March 1988 vol 130 cc413-4W
19. Mr. McFall

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how much Government money is received by non-statutory training organisations in the current year.

Mr. Nicholls

It is not possible to give total figures for Government support to non-statutory training organisations. Government funds made available to non-statutory training organisations through the Manpower Services Commission in 1987–88 included some £5.8 million for the improvement of the training infrastructure in their sectors. They also received substantial funds as YTS managing agents, including about £6 million from the MSC's large companies unit. details of funds allocated through MSC area offices are not available.

113. Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what steps are being taking in the light of recent reports to change non-statutory training organisations.

Mr. Nicholls

A recent report commissioned by the Manpower Services Commission concluded that the majority of non-statutory training organisations are effective, but made certain recommendations about how the performance of all the organisations might be improved. The Confederation of British Industry is currently consulting non-statutory training organisations about these recommendations My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State will consider further steps in the light of the outcome of these consultations, and the advice of the Manpower Services Commission.
