40. Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many factory inspectors the Health and Safety Executive had in place on 1 March.

Mr. Nicholls

On 1 March 1988 there were 598 factory inspectors in post in the Health and Safety Executive.

55. Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the change in the number of Her Majesty's factory inspectors since 1979.

Mr. Nicholls

On 1 April 1979 there were 742 factory inspectors in post in the Health and Safety Executive. On 1 March 1988 there were 598. Recruitment to the inspectorate is at present under way.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in theOfficial Report, the numbers of Health and Safety Executive factory inspectors in (a) Scotland and (b) the United Kingdom in each year since the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act.
