HC Deb 24 March 1988 vol 130 cc218-9W
14. Mr. Nellist

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what monitoring procedures he intends to introduce to check the effects of the Wages (Northern Ireland) Order on the level of young persons' wages; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Mawhinney

We shall not be introducing any specific monitoring procedures. The high minimum rates set by wages councils for young people in relation to often more experienced adult workers are prejudicial to their employment prospects and the effects of the Wages (Northern Ireland) Order can only be beneficial to young people.
