HC Deb 24 March 1988 vol 130 cc175-6W
Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on prescribed expenditure allocations in respect of education for 1988–89.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment has announced that additional capital allocations will be made for 1988–89. Twelve million, five hundred thousand pounds of the total will be allocated in respect of education and, in particular, but not exclusively, to support projects in inner city areas. A further £5.2 million in respect of education is expected to be available later provided that returns from local authorities do not indicate a likely overspend of the revised DOE-LA1 cash limit in 1988–89. My Department will be inviting local education authorities which cover urban programme areas to submit plans for projects which they would undertake if granted a supplementary allocation.

A small number of authorities have already satisfied me that, because of special circumstances, they would be able to make particularly effective use of an additional allocation in 1988–89. Those authorities will receive appropriate notification shortly.
