§ Mr. Nicholas BennettTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what representations he has received about the 30 mph speed limit; and if he will make a statement;
(2) what representations he has received concerning the 70 mph speed limit; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleySpeed limits are the subject of much correspondence, reflecting a wide range of views. We believe that the 30 mph national speed limit in built-up areas and the 70 mph national speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways — unless signs show otherwise — strike the right balance between mobility and safety. Departmental circulars set out the general criteria for assessment of the most appropriate speed limit under different circumstances.
