(3) how many people were imprisoned for rates default (a) in England and Wales and (b) in Stoke on Trent in 1987.

Mr. John Patten

According to the latest information held centrally, which is approximate, about 370 persons were received into prison department establishments in England and Wales from all courts in 1986 for nonpayment of rates. Of these, six were known to have been sentenced by courts in Stoke on Trent. Information or the receipt of social security benefits immediately prior to imprisonment and on arrest warrants issued for rate default is not available centrally.
