HC Deb 23 March 1988 vol 130 c118W
Mr. Fisher

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether it is his intention that licences for national commercial radio stations, once acquired, will be freely transferable.

Mr. Renton

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to a similar question from him on 27 January at columns251–52.

Mr. Fisher

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether it is his intention to auction licences for national commercial radio stations by means of(a) a lump sum, (b) a percentage of future pretax profits, (c) a percentage of future revenue or (d) a combination of the above.

Mr. Renton

We envisage that the radio authority will invite tenders in the form of a single cash figure, though it may be payable in instalments over the period of the licence.

Mr. Fisher

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether radio stations granted licences by the new radio authority will be able to promote(a) lotteries, (b) bingo and (c) other gaming activities during their programmes.

Mr. Renton

We envisage no need for restrictions in broadcasting legislation additional to those in current gaming legislation.
