To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he proposes to take to protect employment in the Scottish mining industry.

The Government are, of course, always concerned that overall employment levels within Scotland should be as high as possible, but within particular sectors this must depend on the strength and competitiveness of the industries involved.
