To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if there will be a new design for the £1 coin.

Mr. Lawson

Yes. Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to approve my recommendation for a new design for the £1 coin. The obverse will continue to show the Raphael Maklouf portrait of Her Majesty. The new reverse design will feature a shield of the royal arms ensigned by a representation of the royal crown. Coins bearing the new design will be available for general circulation on 21 April 1988.
