HC Deb 22 March 1988 vol 130 c86W
Mr. Allan Stewart

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) whether long cut oral tobacco is exempt from the proposed ban on certain oral tobaccos under section 11(5) of the Consumer Protection Act 1987;

(2) which British tobacco manufacturers will be affected by the proposed ban on certain oral tobaccos under section 11(5) of the Consumer Protection Act 1987.

Mrs. Currie

Long cut oral tobaccos vary in composition. A particular brand would be exempt only if subject to duty under the Tobacco Products Duty Act 1979. The Department wrote to British tobacco manufacturers, amongst others, on 26 February to inform them of the Government's proposals to ban the supply of certain oral tobacco products and to seek their representations on the matter. We shall not be in a position to say precisely which companies would be affected until those representations have been received.
