HC Deb 22 March 1988 vol 130 c52W
Mr. Gregory

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, pursuant to his reply of 17 November,Official Report, column 466, what is the latest information on the numbers of establishments accepted for crown hotel classification; how many hotels have failed to meet the specifications; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

According to the Wales tourist board the information as at 21 March 1988 is as follows:

Category Number
Listed 130
1 crown 46
2 crowns 305
3 crowns 275
4 crowns 177
5 crowns 31
Awaiting classification 16
Total 980

Since the Wales tourist board introduced classification, 55 hotels have failed to meet the criteria, with 11 establishments having been rejected since 1 April 1987.

The Wales tourist board, following wide consultation, has announced its intention to introduce a qualitative grading scheme for hotel and other serviced accommodation by 1990. The new system is similar to that in operation in Scotland, and will supplement the present crown classification scheme under which establishments are classified by available facilities.
