§ Ms. GordonTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps have been taken by the London Docklands development corporation to set up the employment monitoring group incorporating the local boroughs and the docklands forum as prescribed in the 55W master building agreement with the Canary wharf developers Olympia and York; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. TrippierThe master building agreement allows for the monitoring of local employment. Olympia and York Ltd has instituted written procedures which will be contractually enforced on all companies working on Canary wharf to submit, on a monthly basis, returns of people employed locally and people undertaking training from local areas. These will be submitted directly to the LDDC and the London borough of Tower Hamlets. The LDDC will then at regular intervals provide this information to the docklands forum.
§ Ms. GordonTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many square feet of offices on Canary wharf the master builder agreement between the London Docklands development corporation and Olympia and York commits the developer to build; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. TrippierThe master building agreement commits the developers of Canary wharf to build 5.4 million sq ft of development in phase 1. The whole development provides in aggregate 12.2 million sq ft of office, retail and hotel floor space. This is a bold and innovative development. It will provide an enormous increase in employment opportunities in docklands, and will add further impetus to the regeneration of docklands as a whole.
