HC Deb 16 March 1988 vol 129 c571W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether, in view of the fact that Easter is a movable feast, he will take steps to fix 1 May each year as the eligibility date for pupils where entitlement to start school depends on the start of the summer term.

Mr. Dunn

No. The Government have no plans to alter the requirement for schools to admit children at the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. It is open to local education authorities and schools to admit children earlier than this and it is clear that most are doing so.
