To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what increases he has made in the central funding of universities in the last two years; and if he will make a statement.

The information is provided in table 12.1 of "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1988–89 to 1990–91" Volumn II (Cm. 288). Current provision for the universities increased by 10.5 per cent. from 1986–87 to 1987–88 and by 7.9 per cent. from 1987–88 to 1988–89.
