To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to compensate students who from April will have to pay 20 per cent. of their rates for the first time.

Mr. Jackson

There will be no addition to student grants in respect of liability for rates in the current academic year. Changes in the housing benefit system, which will apply to all categories of claimant from April this year, were among the factors taken into account in determining grant levels for 1988–89 and will be considered in coming to decisions about future levels of student support.
