§ 77. Mr. CranTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students graduate each year from United Kingdom institutions of higher education with degrees in Japanese; what priority he attaches to developing the study of Japanese language and society; and what plans he has to encourage such study.
Mr. JacksonTwenty students with degrees in Japanese as a single subject graduated from universities in Great Britain in 1986. The Government recognise the importance of Japanese studies. These fell within the scope of the review of Asian and African languages and area studies conducted by Sir Peter Parker in 1985–86. The University Grants Committee has accepted, and is now implementing, the recommendations of the Parker report.
