HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 cc485-6W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list all "smart" defensive weapons currently deployed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in the European land, air and sea military theatres.

Mr. Ian Stewart

There is no formal NATO definition of a "smart" weapon, although the term is in general used to describe weapons with an autonomous navigation and target acquisition capability. There are a number of such weapons in the inventories of our allies, but it would be for them to provide details of the capabilities of their own weapon systems. The United Kingdom's major equipment programmes are described in successive Statements on the Defence Estimates.
