§ Mr. Temple-MorrisTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether any consideration has been given to the development value of the present sites of Her Majesty's prisons at Cardiff, Reading and Swansea in the context of the prison building programme;
(2) what are the current site values as such and for development purposes of the present sites of Her Majesty's prisons at Cardiff, Reading and Swansea.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggIt is recognised that sites such as those mentioned may have considerable redevelopment value. Under present rules the proceeds of any sale would not be available for prison building. Moreover, each establishment is well placed to perform its function as a local prison. The population pressures on the prison system are so great that there can be no question at present of selling any of them. Current site values have not therefore been assessed.
