Mr. Cran

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many members of staff within his Department are located within each region outside London; what percentage this constitutes of staff within his Department; and what are the comparable figures, in absolute arid percentage terms, in 1979.

The number of percentage of Department of Transport staff (including casuals and part-timers) located outside London is as follows:

South West 1,103 7.3 864 5.8
East Anglia 314 2.1 324 2.2
East Midlands 545 3.6 497 3.4
West Midlands 773 5.1 720 4.9
North West 842 5.5 797 5.4
Yorkshire and Humberside 694 4.6 669 4.5
Northern 452 3.0 453 3.1
Wales 4,665 30.7 5,193 35.1
Scotland 797 5.3 752 5.1
Northern Ireland 15 0.1 0 0.0

Organisation changes made since 1979 will distort any comparison between years. These include the transfer of 765 staff from the Department of Environment in 1981 and 1,459 from the Department of Trade and Industry in 1984.
