Mr. Wilshire

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what criteria are used by the Metropolitan police when approving businesses for the removal of vehicles from motorways.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I am informed by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that garages are selected for removal work on the basis of proximity to the motorway. Garages are approved only if they provide a 24-hour service, can deal with vehicles of any age or condition, and have secure storage facilities.
