HC Deb 03 March 1988 vol 128 cc699-700W
Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what action he intends to take in view at Banbridge district council's decision to prevent further registered for a job or a youth training scheme place will be entitled to benefit for a short period whilst they consider the job and youth training scheme opportunities that are available.

The guarantee of a youth training scheme place to all 16 and 17-year-olds who want one will be seen by the majority of young people as an opportunity to make a good start in life. Someone who joins the youth training scheme will be able to receive income support, if appropriate, to supplement his training allowance.

No estimates are available of the number of 16 and 17-year-olds who will be living away from home in September and who will be unable to pay rental or accommodation charges. We estimate, however, there are some 21,000 in the age group in Great Britain who are either boarders or householders; there are no comparable figures for the Stoke area.
