30. Mr. Clelland

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many countries currently have a special rapporteur appointed by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

Mr. Eggar

The 43rd session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights decided in March 1987 to renew the mandates, for a further year in each case, of its special rapporteurs on Afghanistan and Chile and its special representatives on E1 Salvador and Iran. The 44th session now in progress (1 February to 11 March) will decide whether or not to extend these mandates again.

33. Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the reappointment of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights' special rapporteurs on Chile and E1 Salvador.

Mr. Eggar

We shall be supporting the renewal of the mandate of the special rapporteur on Chile. In the case of E1 Salvador, we shall consider our policy carefully with our European Community partners once a draft resolution has appeared.

54. Mr. McKelvey

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if Her Majesty's Government supported the appointment of a United Nations rapporteur on human rights in E1 Salvador.

Mr. Eggar

We voted in favour of the establishment of the mandate of the United Nations special representative on E1 Salvador at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in 1981. We shall consider how to vote in this year's commission once we have discussed the resolution with our European Community partners.
