HC Deb 01 March 1988 vol 128 c494W
Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons from ethnic minority groups are employed as(a) police officers, (b) prison officers and (c) probation officers in England and Wales.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

There were 1,108 police officers from the ethnic minority communities as at 31 December 1987. Because of a low response rate to ethnic monitoring surveys, I regret that accurate information on numbers in the prison service is not yet available. Nor is it available for the probation service, where manpower returns seeking this information are still being analysed.
