33. Mr. Fallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many unemployed people have found work through job clubs in the north-east over the last 10 years.

Mr. Lee

Between November 1984, when the first job club opened, and December 1987, a total of 4,412 people had found work through job clubs in the north-east. A further 1,345 took up a place on the community programme, a training scheme or the enterprise allowance scheme.

37. Mr. Moss

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the progress of job clubs in placing people in jobs.

Mr. Lee

The aim of the job club service is to help long-term unemployed people to help themselves find a job. From April 1987 to December 1987, the latest date for which figures are available, 74,653 people passed through job clubs of which 40,685–54 per cent.—found jobs. A further 10,249 — 14 per cent. — gained a place on the community programme, entered training or took up the enterprise allowance scheme.
