Mr. Tony BanksTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information his Department has on the numbers of permanent jobs obtained in the private sector by inner-city school leavers via the Boston compact; and in what ways Her Majesty's Government are assisting local United Kingdom education authorities involved in similar local compacts to obtain private sector jobs for inner-city residents.
§ Mrs. RumboldThe Government do not collect such statistics but reports from Boston indicate that in 1987 some 1,007 eligible students obtained employment in the 375 firms which took part in the compact.
My Department is enthusiastic in supporting LEAs which come forward with plans for introducing the compact scheme and will actively encourage both local employers and LEAs to develop such initiatives.
