HC Deb 21 June 1988 vol 135 c534W
Mr. Oppenheim

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors are currently employed by the National Health Service in Derbyshire; and what was the figure in 1979.

Mr. Newton

The information in the table shows the total number of hospital and community health service medical staff based on whole-time equivalents at 30 September each year. The figures exclude all consultants and senior registrars whose contracts are held by the regional health authority. There will therefore be more doctors actually working in Derbyshire than accounted for in the table.

Hospital and community health service medical staff at 30 September each year
Derbyshire
Whole-time equivalent
1979 250
1986 290

Note: Figures include permanent paid, honorary and locum staff but exclude consultants and senior registrars whose contracts are held by the regional health authorities. Distribution of consultants and senior registrars within non-teaching district health authorities is not collected centrally. Figures are rounded to nearest 10.
