HC Deb 21 June 1988 vol 135 c512W
Mr. Nigel Griffiths

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what are the estimated cost savings which have been identified as arising from the ending of the requirement for cereal seed testing before marketing; what is the estimated cost of (i) additional enforcement measures and (ii) additional monitoring measures arising from the proposed change; and if he will make a statement on his proposals for funding any additional costs.

Mr. Donald Thompson

[holding answer 17 June 1988]: The information requested is given in paragraphs 394, 403 and 476 of the report on plant variety testing and seed certification systems in the United Kingdom. The cost of additional monitoring measures are estimated to be minimal. The additional enforcement and monitoring costs can be accommodated within the gross saving of £652,000 proposed for seed certification.
