To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will hold discussions with the chairman of British Rail about the provision of rolling stock and locomotives for the 1990s.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State and I already hold frequent discussions with the chairman of BR on investment in new locomotives and rolling stock, for which BR plans to spend around £1 billion over the next five years, making this the biggest programme of locomotive and rolling stock renewal for decades.
