HC Deb 17 June 1988 vol 135 c364W
Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has on the increased risk of lung cancer from passive smoking.

Mrs. Currie

The fourth report of the independent scientific committee on smoking and health, published in March this year, concludes that breathing other people's tobacco smoke gives rise to a 10 to 30 per cent. increase in the risk of lung cancer among non-smokers. This is in line with the findings of the International Agency for Research into Cancer, the United States National Research Council and the United States Surgeon General, all of which conclude that passive smoking increases the risk of lung cancer. Copies of the independent scientific committee's report are in the Library.
