To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has reached a decision on the school closure proposals referred to him by Strathclyde regional council; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Rifkind

Last month Strathclyde region submitted to me 34 proposals for the closure, rezoning or change of site of schools which require my consent under section 22B of the Education (Scotland) Act 1980. I have given my consent to the following:

  • Castlehead High School, Paisley—extension of delineated area.
  • St. Margarets Primary School, New Cumnock—closure.
  • Daer and Powtrail Primary School, Ianark Division—closure.
  • Donaldson Street School, Kirkintilloch—relocation.
  • Girvan Primary School, Girvan—extension of delineated area to include part of delineated area of Assel Primary School which is to close.

I have refused consent to the following:

  • Paisley Grammar School—closure.
  • Notre Dame High School, Glasgow—closure.

Decisions on the other cases will be notified to the education authority as soon as possible.
