HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 c252W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether the X-ray machines used to examine passengers' hand baggage at Heathrow and marked safe for film up to 1,000 ASA are safe for film rated at(a) 1,000 ASA; (b) 1,600 ASA; and (c) 3,500 ASA; and how many complaints have been received about the fogging of such film.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The United Kingdom aviation security programme, which my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State administers, provides for passengers who fear that any article they are carrying might be damaged if passed through the X-ray machine at an airport to be afforded the alternative of having the article examined physically by a member of the security staff. Any arrangements made to indicate to passengers that particular X-ray machines are safe for particular kinds of film are entirely the responsibility of the airport authority concerned. So. too, are any complaints about the fogging of film which has been passed through the machines.
