HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 cc251-2W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many bypasses have been begun in each of the last 30 years for which figures are available.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Eleven bypasses were started in 1986–87 and 14 in 1987–88.

For earlier years, the information is not available in the form requested. Figures for the numbers of bypasses completed since 1974 are as follows. It can be assumed that in most cases construction started approximately two years before.

Year Number of completed bypasses
1974–75 13
1975–76 21
1976–77 17
1977–78 9
1978–79 7
1979–80 4
1980–81 3
1981–82 8
1982–83 12
1983–84 7
1984–85 8
1985–86 11
1986–87 14
1987–88 14

No information is available for years before 1974. Other schemes, although not designated bypasses, also have a bypassing effect.
