HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 c204W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of pig farmers in Scotland are estimated still to employ dry sow stalls; how this proportion compares with 10 years ago; and what action he plans to take to ensure the phasing out of such stalls.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The precise information requested is not held centrally, but present indications are that some 60 to 65 per cent. of sows are currently housed in the stalls concerned.

The Farm Animal Welfare Council has recently completed a review of pig production systems. The council's report makes a number of recommendations which could influence future housing arrangements. Interested parties are currently being consulted and their comments will be fully considered.
