HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 cc221-2W
Mrs. Margaret Ewing

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many serving or former South African military personnel were present at RAF Lossiemouth on 29 and 30 April for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Buccaneer aircraft.

Mr. Freeman

The celebrations held at RAF Lossiemouth on 29 and 30 April commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Buccaneer aircraft were primarily social in nature and the majority of those involved were United Kingdom service men from the Royal Navy and RAF. No South African or indeed other foreign military personnel were specifically invited, and, so far as I am aware, no South African military personnel were present. The celebrations were advertised widely in the international aviation press and a message of congratulation was received from the South African Air Force, which also operates Buccaneers.
