65. Mr. Gale

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on progress in implementing the Community set-aside-scheme in the United Kingdom.

Mr. MacGregor

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply given earlier today to the hon. Member for Burnley (Mr. Pike)

50. Mr. Livsey

To ask the Minister of Agriculture Fisheries and Food what representations he has made to the European Community on the proposals for the substitution of cereals set-aside with grazing land.

Mr. MacGregor

The Community set-aside scheme allows the option to member states to permit land set aside from arable crops to be grazed by livestock. In discussion of the detailed rules, I have insisted that there should be tighter control on the number of livestock which can be grazed on set-aside land in those member states applying this option.
