HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 c466W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with the Government of Turkey concerning the European conventions on the repatriation of prisoners and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

Both the United Kingdom and Turkey are parties to the Council of Europe convention on the transfer of sentenced persons. The convention came into force for Turkey on 1 January 1988. There have been no discussions between our Governments on the operation of the convention, but there has been direct contact between the Home Office and the Turkish Ministry of Justice about individuals who have expressed an interest in transfer, under the terms of the convention, to serve the remainder of their sentences in their home countries. These exchanges are continuing.
