To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many redundancies were notified in the northern region(a) at the latest month and (b) in the same date in 1987.

Mr. Nicholls

In April, there were 2,693 advanced notifications of redundancies in the northern region compared with 2,134 in April last year. Some of the advanced notifications of redundancies are normally averted.
