To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many local enterprise agencies are currently in existence.

Mr. Cope

There are currently 416 local enterprise agencies throughout the United Kingdom. Of these, 365 are approved under the terms of the 1982 Finance Act, which allows business sector sponsors tax relief on their contributions to the agencies. There are 309 agencies in England of which 189 receive Government support under the local enterprise agency grant scheme.
