HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 cc526-7W
Mr. Chris Smith

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table showing public expenditure by main programme in real terms for each year from 1975 onwards, taking 1975 as the base year at 100.

Mr. Major

The table shows, in index form (1978–79= 100), the changes in real terms in the public expenditure planning total by function since 1978–79. Figures for earlier years are not readily available on a comparable basis.

variable interest rates for non-oil developing countries, for 1975 and for each year from 1980 to 1986 (the latest available year), is as follows:

Percentage of public and publicly guaranteed long-term debt outstanding and disbursed at variable interest rates, non-oil developing countries, 1975, 1980–1986
Year end Percentage
1975 16.6
1980 31.1
1981 34.4
1982 35.5
1983 39.8
1984 39.9
1985 39.8
1986 43.6

Note:

Non-oil developing countries are defined as all countries included in the World Bank debt tables less those classified as "oil exporters".

Comparable information for each year from 1973 to 1979 (other than for 1975) may be obtained only at disproportionate cost. Figures for the percentage of total debt at variable interest rates are unavailable.
