HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 c445W
Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if the Government have any plans to seek to increase the penalties for litter-related offences; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Under the Litter Act 1983 a person convicted of leaving litter in an open place may be fined up to £400. We have no plans to increase this. The Government have, however, given their full support to the Tidy Britain Group, which has initiated a programme of experimental projects designed to examine ways of dealing with the problem of litter.
