To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the average expenditure per person in the United Kingdom in 1987 for total health care provision broken down into convenient age groups.

In 1986, the latest year for which information is available from the national accounts published by the Central Statistical Office, the average expenditure per person in the United Kingdom on health care (public and private) was £384. No breakdown of this total is available by age, but an analysis of gross expenditure on health and personal social services in England in 1985–86 is published in "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1988–89 to 1990–91" (Cm 288-II)—chart 14.4.

In 1986, the latest year for which information is available from the national accounts published by the Central Statistical Office, the average expenditure per person in the United Kingdom on health care was:

It is estimated that in 1987–88 United Kingdom gross expenditure on the National Health Service was equivalent to £380 per person. Later figures for private sector expenditure are not yet available.
