HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 c507W
77. Mr. Speller

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment which sectors of the industrial and service industries are currently showing the most growth and potential for growth throughout the United Kingdom.

Mr. Lee

During 1987, employment in the United Kingdom grew fastest in banking, insurance and finance (by 7 per cent.), construction (by 4 per cent.) and transport and communications (by 3 per cent.). In addition, employment in tourism-related industries grew by over 3 per cent. in 1987.

The Department does not make forecasts of employment changes. However with the economy about to enter its eighth successive year of growth, all sectors of the economy should benefit from the continuation of the Government's current economic policies.
