To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many unemployed people have been helped to start a business during the last 12 months through the enterprise allowance scheme.

Mr. Cope

During the year April 1987 to March 1988, a total of 106,305 people joined the scheme. 110,000 places will be available during the current year.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the number of people currently receiving the trading allowance on the enterprise allowance scheme.

At the middle of May 1988 there were over 93,000 people receiving the enterprise allowance.
