To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many badgers have been killed by his Ministry in each parish in 1986 and 1987 as a result of herd breakdown of tuberculosis; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Donald Thompson

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave on 4 May to the hon. Member for Caerphilly (Mr. Davies) at columns482–84. All badgers taken in those removal operations were killed for post mortem examination.

Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, pursuant to his answer of 19 May,Official Report, column 569, when he expects the live testing of badgers for tuberculosis to begin and on what scale.

Mr. Donald Thompson

[holding answer 26 May 1988]: Until the laboratory tests have been completed and the results validated it is not possible to say when the live testing of badgers for tuberculosis will begin, or on what scale.

Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he has any further information regarding the timing and scale of use of the tuberculosis vaccine for badgers.

Mr. Donald Thompson

[holding answer 26 May 1988]: I have nothing to add to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member on 20 May at col. 612.
