To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers and immigration were involved in the operation on 8

May in connection with the Advanced College of Business and Cultural Studies; how many people and of what nationalities were both interviewed and detained in the operation, for how long and where; what was the immigration status of those who were arrested but not charged and for how long they were under arrest; and with regard to what breaches of immigration control people were interviewed or charged as a result of the operation.

Sixty-six immigration officers and 104 police officers were involved in the operation on 8 May concerning the Advanced College of Business and Cultural Studies.

Sixty-three persons were arrested of whom sixty-one were identified as being apparently in breach of immigration control. Two persons, both Ghanaian, were found not to be offenders and were released after being detained for less than six hours. The remainder have been identified as follows: Twenty-nine illegal entrants (twenty-six Ghanaians, two Nigerians, one Sierra Leonean) Twenty-two served with notices of intention to deport (nineteen Ghanaians, two Nigerians and one Ivory Coast National) One subject of a current deportation order (Nigerian) One charged with overstaying (Ghanaian). Two charged with working in breach of their conditions (Ghanaians) Two found to be offenders but not charged (Ghanaians).

Inquiries into the immigration status of the remaining four persons (Ghanaians) are continuing. Nineteen of the twenty-nine illegal entrants detected have been removed, and four persons served with a notice of intention to deport have left the United Kingdom.

Of the 13 offenders still detained, three are illegal entrants (two Ghanaians, one Nigerian), nine have been served with a notice of intention to deport (all Ghanaians) and one is subject of a current deportation order (Nigerian).
