HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 cc824-5W
Ms. Mowlam

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security (1) how many people were(a) in receipt of supplementary benefit on 1 April, and (b) in receipt of income support on 1 May for each of his Department's local offices of Redcar, Middlesbrough, Eston, Hartlepool and Stockton;

(2) if he will give the number of, or estimates of, people who were, in November 1987 (a) in receipt of supplementary benefit and (b) dependent upon supplementary benefit, in respect of his Department's offices of Redcar, Middlesbrough, Eston, Hartlepool and Stockton.

Mr. Scott

The numbers of people in receipt of supplementary benefit and income support in November 1987 and May 1988, the closest dates available, are as follows:

Local Offices
Redear Middlesbrough Eston Hartlepool Stockton
Number of people in receipt of supplementary benefit at 17 November 1987 9,492 23,141 8,445 12,365 20,321
Number of people in receipt of income support at 31 May 1988 8,528 20,714 7,572 11,083 17,597

Source: 100 per cent, of cases in action which includes a small number of cases not actually in receipt of benefit. These figures may, however, overstate the number of people receiving supplementary benefit. The footnote to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Hyndburn (Mr. Hargreaves) on 31 March 1988, at columns 660–61, refers.

Note: This information is provisional and subject to amendment.

I regret that information on the number of people dependent upon supplementary benefit is not available at local level.
