asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of the national shortage of nursing and auxiliary staff, they will grant work permits to nationals of European Community member states willing to work as care attendants to severely disabled people.

Nationals of European Community member states (other than Spain and Portugal) wishing to work as care attendants in the United Kingdom do not require work permits. Spanish and Portuguese nationals will be similarly eligible from 1st January 1993.
