HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 cc445-6W
Mr. McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he proposes to take to(a) prevent applicants for planning permission for works to tenanted residential property from making false statements about their intentions for the future of the tenants and (b) provide tenants with rights to safeguard their position during the planning process.

Mr. Chope

A grant of planning permission cannot remove the legal rights of any tenant of the land to which the permission relates, nor is protection of those rights a function of the planning system. A tenant may make representations to the local planning authority about the land use planning implications of a planning application and the authority may impose planning conditions giving effect to the applicant's undertakings in so far as they relate to land-use planning matters.
